Anch. assembly harbors communists!

E-mail Print

According to KTUU, the Anchorage Assembly erupted in name-calling before it heard public testimony on the municipality's long-term plan. The fuss all started when Assembly-person Bill Starr took issue with amendments to the plan made by Assembly-person Sheila Selkregg. The amendments fell under the heading "Social Equity," which Starr called "communist." "This Selkregg manifesto," Starr called it, seemed to call for a move "toward a classless society." Selkregg said that she was just trying to make sure that low- and middle-income citizens factor into decisions made by the body about the future of Anchorage. Even though Selkregg's amendments passed a vote of the assembly, the mayor vetoed them because they were inserted without consulting the mayor's office. Read more here. Alaska Beat can't wait until every knee-jerk critic of Marx and Engels' critique of capitalism has actually read it and the major ideas that grew from it. We're not holding our breath, though. But still, we're dying to know what the vetoed amendments actually said.
