According to the Anchorage Daily News's rural affairs blog, "The Village," the first fixed-wing aircraft in two years landed at the Bering Strait village of Diomede last week, and residents are now enjoying regular flights to and from the island. The runway that allows airplanes to land at the village is only possible when good sea ice forms, and last winter, it didn't. This winter, according to one resident, the ice was smooth enough that no one had to groom the landing surface. Check out the reader-submitted pictures and read more here, including what is being done to help prevent the island's residents from being marooned so badly again.
