According to CBC News, one small research study in Canada's C$22 million Olympic sport domination program, "Own the Podium" may or may not help Canada's curling team win gold, but in the process it dispelled one popular myth. A researcher followed a stone and sweeper with an infrared camera and determined that rather than melting the ice in front of the stone with their brooms, sweepers actually just warm the ice slightly, not much more than a degree and a half, changing the way the reacts to the stone's pressure. The research made "dozens" of other discoveries that may help the curling team in Vancouver, but what they might be is anyone's guess at this point: "We're sworn to secrecy," the researcher said.
