According to the Associated Press (via the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner), an Alaska bar committee has recommended that the law license of former U.S. Attorney Wev Shea be suspended. The recommendation lists a host of professional violations in Shea representing Deborah Ivy in a family dispute against a former client of his, David Kyzer. Among the allegations are that Shea made "false statements of fact" and acted unprofessionally in court pleadings. Shea disputes the allegations and findings of the three-member panel, and said Thursday that he intends to appeal. The panel wrote, "Respondent has a long and proud background of public service, and he is credible in his testimony that he wholeheartedly believes in the appropriateness of his actions. But that is precisely the problem. Respondent still does not appreciate that his actions were inappropriate." The matter has yet to reach a disciplinary committee, but the hearing committee recommended that Shea's license be suspended for 25 months and that he demonstrate "via evidence from a psychologist or psychiatrist" that he is mentally fit to practice law.
