Alaska Redistricting Board votes to appeal

According to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, the Alaska Redistricting Board voted unanimously, 5-0, to appeal part of a Superior Court decision regarding the new voting districts it drew based on the latest U.S. Census. The unanimous vote to appeal concerned the court's ruling on the planned borders of House District 37, which placed residents in parts of Ester and Goldstream Valley, near Fairbanks, with rural areas stretching to the Bering Sea, and House District 38, which joined residents of the western tip of the Aleutian Chain with the mainland. The board won't, however, appeal the order to redraw House Districts 1 and 2, which were judged invalid due to non-compactness. The Board's attorney Michael White hinted that his client's case appealing districts 37 and 38 is strong and questioned Superior Court Judge Michael McConahy’s reasoning for ruling against each of those borders.
