For 12 crazy days, culminating on Labor Day, Palmer plays host to southcentral Alaska's biggest community party. Thousands respond to the giant vegetables' siren call and make their way to the Alaska State Fair, our combination harvest festival and farewell to summer.
The food, from elephant ears to turkey legs, is oversized (and overindulgence may lead to supersize) and the rides are -- well, let's just say they're expensive. The nights are finally dark enough for fireworks and at last we can get the light show denied us on Independence Day. But the faces are the best thing about the fair. When you collect this many Alaskans in one place, the people watching is tremendous. --Stephen Nowers Photos ©Clark James Mishler / www.mishlerphotos.com |
