BP's 'static kill' working so far

If you've been worried about the ongoing Macondo blowout, you can breathe a little easier today. According to numerous sources, the latest capping measure, the so-called "static kill," in which crews pump drilling mud into the well from the top, has been a success. This latest development means that the well is no longer blowing oil into the Gulf or into a temporary containment cap, but the fix isn't permanent. BP is still monitoring the well's pressure and working with other officials to figure out whether or not to pump concrete in through the top of the well, or wait to seal it with concrete pumped into the wellbore from below ground via relief wells. Those relief wells are still being drilled, and officials say they're still the ultimate way to seal the well for good. Read BP's press release on the matter at Rig Zone, here. In other Gulf blowout news, a White House has reported that a new review indicates that as much as 75 percent of released Macondo oil has been collected, burned or dissipated.
