CampFire USA will fold in Fairbanks

According to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, Camp Fire USA is closing most of its operations in Fairbanks on August 1. The organization had been providing child-care programs and and summer camps to the community since the 1960's, and many area parents have relied upon it for quality, affordable care. The closings are the result of a few factors, a spokesperson said. Whereas enrollment usually approached 300 kids, only 80 to 90 are enrolled now, and the general economic downturn caused Camp Fire to lose some individual and corporate donors. The Camp Fire Alaska Council tried several ways to decrease costs and survive, but in the end, the financial difficulties proved too strong for the Fairbanks office. Read much more here, including which organizations might take up the slack, and which Fairbanks Camp Fire programs will remain in operation. |
