Readers may be familiar with the recent concern over polar bear populations as the Arctic continues to warm, but this may be even more worrisome. According to a long report published by Yale University's "environment 360," scientists are increasingly concerned about a recent precipitous trend in caribou populations around the world. Researchers are starting to believe that the observed declines of caribou populations across the circumpolar Arctic and sub-Arctic are due to primarily to climate-related changes in the availability of the animals' preferred food and to habitat loss as a result of resource development. The report ranges widely around the globe and discusses recent studies that indicate hunting pressure is likely a lesser factor than previously thought. Read much, much more, here. |
