The Concerned: Without Sarah Palin, wild GOP race has become a circus

TO: The Republican Party Elephant
Subject: The Big Top
Dear Grand Old Elephant, Since your first significant appearances in 1874 as mascot for the Republican Party, you've come to symbolize a long list of positive attributes. You have a long memory, prefer fair dealing, show unmatched strength in defense of your herd, and always present a formidable and steady opponent for the Democratic Party, whether its platform is depicted as a tiger, fox, donkey, or other fearsome creature. Whatever the threat, you've stomped it flat plenty of times. But we're worried about you lately. The current GOP primary is making you look like a circus animal. We're not sure if you have a television or Internet connection, but the primary race has been one sideshow after another so far. We're not sure if it's just a coincidence, but ever since Sarah Palin, the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee and former governor of Alaska, finally said she'd decided not to run, things have gotten pretty wild. News reporters turned their attention to the declared candidates. When they started shaking trees, all manner of fruit and nuts started falling down. The polls have been all over the place as your party's voters narrow in on their choice. And it seems that every week there's some new poll showing a new challenger to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's consistent string of top showings. A few strong contenders have lost significant promise after peaking, and one of them has dropped out completely. Herman Cain, the former pizza magnate and one-time Georgia senatorial candidate, captivated people with his extremely simple plan for the economy and his candid admission that foreign policy was not his strong suit. Ron Paul, the longtime Texas congressman, keeps winning now and then, and his supporters are passionate, but he's not considered a serious choice for the nomination by a wide segment of the party establishment. Texas Gov. Rick Perry had been charging ahead, but after a series of bizarre gaffes, including one cringe-worthy New Hampshire speech that went viral and caused some pundits to speculate that he was intoxicated, he hasn't returned to the top. Yet he went nuclear this week in a bid to regain standing ahead of the Iowa caucus by releasing a controversial new TV ad aimed at religious conservatives and bedecked with red meat for the base. Lately, former Speaker of the U.S. House Newt Gingrich is presenting the most credible challenge yet to Romney, who doesn't excite the party's base anymore than John McCain did in 2008. But with ascension to the top tier comes a brighter spotlight. And despite the absolute genius of Gingrich's ability to position himself as anti-establishment after a lucrative career in the establishment, the proclaimed leader of the last Republican revolution, in 1994, has been raising eyebrows with his criticism of child labor laws and his struggle to explain lucrative political consulting with an array of scandalized business interests. And many political pundits wonder at his ability to run a nationwide campaign with so few "boots on the ground" in states beyond the early contests.

I'm a Republican and if Palin would have run, I probably would have pulled my hair out. She's an embarrassment to the party and an embarrassment to the state. I'm happy she quit early--before the campaign even started. I didn't have to wait for her to quit halfway through.

I see the Palinbots are out in force, voting if not posting so much. Ron Paul has some very good things to say about our imperial wars, the lack of control over the Federal Reserve, the wars on drugs, etc. However, he is far from the perfect candidate, though he's the most honest and reliably consistent candidate in the field. He is a supporter of the John Birch Society, those nutcases who brought you a commie under every bed and the supposed attacks on our "precious bodily fluids." (Thank you Stanley Kubrick.) Don't take my word for it. Here's the man himself talking: On the other hand, if they are going to have a circus, Sarah is my pick to drive the clown car.

I always knew hate is what drove ignorance and now I know negative votes in some cases are driven by the outcome of that hate as well~ How odd or shall I say that is a new one under my belt~ I agree on all fronts~ THE WALL

There is no candidate with the record, the passion or the ability to draw the masses like Sarah Palin. Her ideas on energy and job creation are exactly what we need! Sarah Palin is the Constitutional Conservative that will lead America back to greatness! We hope and pray she does reconsider for 2012. Every candidate on the stage now leaves so much to be desired! Sarah 2012! We will wait for Sarah!
by SPECKLEFOOT | December 11, 2011 - 11:03pm
Oh, there's an elephant out there. His name is Ron Paul and he's about to stomp Democrat butthead Obama into the dust. Big time. Just watch. America is on the ropes and about to get that Old Time Republican Religion, way Deep Down, we know that the craziness has to stop, the wars and the corruption and the mucked up monetary system, well, it all has to STOP, and deep in our hearts, Americans know that. We don't like to admit it. We still like to hem and haw. But at the end of the day, there is only one candidate out there who is talking about the change we know we have to make----an end to all the war mongering and fear mongering, an end to the oppressive and dishonest banking and tax and monetary system, an end to the fear and the corruption. There's only one real candidate, just one that isn't bought and paid for, one who has proven for forty years that he is devoted to the Constitution and walked the walk for four decades to prove it. Just one. His name is Ron Paul, and he's going to win the election whether or not the Republicans have the sense to nominate him.

I agree. Mitt (giant douche) romney & newt (turd sandwhich) gingrich are keynesians and they are fascists. As such, they are no different from obama or most of the rest of the troglodytes who inhabit washington d.c. As president, Dr. Paul couldn't do a whole lot. He, unlike obama and all the previous presidents, believes and honors the constitution. He will not fancy himself to be a king. The legitimate powers of a US president are quite limited and he will stay within those limitations. However, one of the few powers of a US president is that of 'commander & chief' of the nations military. Dr. Paul would waste no time before bringing our boys & girls home to safety, shutting down most of our military bases across the globe (over 800!) and pursuing our foreign relations as they were meant to be: peaceful commerce with all, entangling aliances with none. But, if you want more of what has brought us to the brink of disaster... by all means, re-elect obama or elect one of his clones... romney or gingrich.

Whoever wins the Republican nomination is going to have to be able to withstand a billion dollar scorched earth trashing of their character by the Democrats. The current infighting amongst the candidates and by the media towards them pales in comparison with what's to come, but it is the process by which we will determine who can survive the onslaught. The Obama administration greatest achievements (the Stimulus Bill and Obamacare) are held in extremely low regard by the voters. 75% of Americans think that the economy is on the wrong track. Obama still blames Bush and will attempt to run against him again, but Americans outside of the Obama fan club are tired of that tack. So the only possible solution to achieve re-election is to destroy the opposition, a practice that Obama is experienced in throughout his career. If only the Democrats had had a similar vetting process back in '07 and '08 then maybe Obama would have been weeded out as the left wing radical that he is instead of being heralded as a moderate force for "Hope and Change". After three and a half years as president, there are still big gaps in his resume, e.g. his formative college years. How could that be? Yet we know every past indiscretion (real or imagined) of each of the Republican candidates. So congratulate yourself and your colleagues, Mr. Woodham, for succedding in starting the character assassination on all of the candidates, except Mr. Romney and Mr. Huntsman. But sure as the sun sets, Romney's turn to be trashed will be up if he wins the nomination. All of a sudden there will a multitude of anti-Mormon stories and innuendos. I'm willing to bet on it.
by Steve L | December 13, 2011 - 4:22am
How can their be character assasination of this lot of GOP hopefuls? They have to have character in the first place!
by AlaskanMariner | December 11, 2011 - 12:35pm
The Circus began with Sarah Palin.....and once she got enough $ in the bank, she quit. Because actually running for President, and, God forbid!, getting elected would require actual work. Then we'd all be taking bets on how long it would be before she became the first President to resign because she was tired of the job.
by Chad_ObamasOpp1 | December 12, 2011 - 2:34pm
Oh you were already at the circus to know this~ How much money they pay~?
by slackjaw | December 12, 2011 - 7:15am
Funny how Andre McCloud hasn't file ONE ethical charge against Parnell, yet managed 15 against Palin in 18 months. I didn't really like Palin and thought ill of her when she quit. However, I believe she is 100% correct; the ethical allegations were outrageous and they were not going to stop. Laws need to be re-written so an Andre McCloud incident can't happen again, even to a lame liberal Democrap.
by Steve L | December 13, 2011 - 4:18am
Andre McCloud IS a republican and your point just proves that Sarah Palin was ethically challenged. Why didn't Sarah Palin reload rather then retreat? Typical GOP give advice that they don't live by themselves!
by randyk43 | December 11, 2011 - 11:41am
I can't see much difference between the two parties. But go ahead and support your "favorite" politician. Neither party or any candidate is worthy.
by DGZL | December 11, 2011 - 11:14am
Too funny. Palin was using her private email address to "govern" AK. Those released official emails actually validated all the complaints against her. Whatever, the woman was toast the minute that Congressman Giffords was shot in her head, a Judge and Child were murdered, as well as other injuries. Sure she has a few stragglers left, but her 15 min's are up. Well, we all know she cannot let it go, she will make another uneducated statment and be back in news as she craves. Her family is a hot mess. She may have some cash, but she is still as useless as any dust ball in the corner of your house. I mean, good god, she totally wrecked Wasilla, so common, if you can manage to wreck an entire town that sustains itself thru meth....wow. ;) wink, wink.

It must feel lonely for the "Undefeated" to be the clown short of a circus. She'll have to stay home and count all that money she made by fooling a bunch of redneck cultists.
by chasm | December 11, 2011 - 7:58am
Talk about clowns, the former part time governor, would make a good one.
by Chad_ObamasOpp1 | December 12, 2011 - 2:33pm
I think you ought to run in this regard~
by bellagrazi | December 11, 2011 - 7:04am
I hope you really are The Concerned, and are not just trying to stir up trouble, because I actually agree with you. All of this could've been avoided if only Sarah Palin had thrown her hat in the ring. She was the perfect candidate to run against Obama. The contrast would've been stark. But now we have all these faux conservatives running. Clowns, if you will. It's a flippin' mess. Reconsider, Sarah, Reconsider!
by alaska1967 | December 11, 2011 - 4:44am
When faced with a choice between a giant douche (mitt romney) and a turd sandwich (newt gingrich) you might pause and ask yourself, "is this the only choice? Newt & mitt are the problem as are all like them in the republi-crat party. If you want more of the same old crony capitalism that has brought us to the brink of financial ruin and made us the scapegoat of every fleabag tyrant in the world... go ahead. Pick one or the other or even try to drag mrs palin back as if she is any different. Or you could decline the giant douche. You could decline the turd sandwich. You could register yourself into the republican side of the republicrat coin and vote for ron paul as the presidential nominee.
by Ramus | December 11, 2011 - 12:46pm
You had a point until you mentioned bringing back Palin or stating that Paul is the answer.
by hardycase | December 11, 2011 - 3:11am
It has been long evident that serious, sensible, studious, superbly talented Gov. Sarah Palin is the most competent, qualified & charismatic potential Presidential candidate in politics today. The Republican Party could have coalesced behind her leadership, and under her militant banners, and easily stormed to victory in 2012. Blame not the Democrats or the lamestream media for her demurral, but rather blame the pompous, pusillanimous RINO pontificators--such as Rove, Krauthammer, Brooks, & George Will--within the back-stabbing Republican Party for the lack of a feasible candidate now.
by Oldhaines | December 10, 2011 - 11:16pm
The relationship between The liberals in this country and Sarah Palin is analogous to the relationship between four year old's and the monster under the bed. The monster does not really exist and is no real threat but it still scares the crap out of the four year old's and they cannot just forget about it.
by Steve L | December 13, 2011 - 4:12am
Sarah Palin doesn't scare liberals, it's the ignorant FOX viewing conservatives that want the country run by an ignorant lazy woman who cannot even raise her children properly yet they believe that she could govern this country, THATS WHATS SCARY! Please tell me what Sarah Palin has done for Alaska since she resigned that has helped Alaska more then she could have as Govenor which was her claim when she resigned?
by Chad_ObamasOpp1 | December 12, 2011 - 2:45pm
Still scares you does it~ Well it will be alright boo boo~
by Oldhaines | December 10, 2011 - 11:08pm
This article could have been written without mentioning Sarah Palin and nothing would have been lost from the article. In Case nobody has noticed yet, she has been irrelevant for about eighteen months.
by Steve L | December 13, 2011 - 4:05am
Sarah Palin and John McCain are responsible for the condition of the GOP today! Sarah Palin is nothing more then a Carnival Barker and sideshow. She is as illrelivent as Sarah Palin light, Michelle Bachmann!
by Chad_ObamasOpp1 | December 12, 2011 - 2:24pm
Yet you read it~ So I now see you lie to yourself alot~
by slackjaw | December 11, 2011 - 9:44am
However, all this mention of clowns and circuses and no mention of Obama? He's the face of the dog and pony show.
by michwolfbc | December 11, 2011 - 11:10am
Lets get over it people that is last thing we need to worry about.. a Circus being made out of the GOP race
by Alaskan2 | December 11, 2011 - 6:02pm
Exactly what has family values got to do with anything? You are free to hold and have the family values you want within your family. But how is it that some voters seem to place high value on the candidates declaration of supporting family values, while most of said candidates don't live the BS they spout? I can't see how someone who proclaims their religion and family values and the like and are the ones most likely to have broken their marriage vows, can be trusted to hold the top office in the country. They are liars and they have proven they are, time after time. If you are going to lie to your wife it should be pretty easy to believe you will lie to us. If people are going to run for office, why can't it be for their abilities and not their religion? I don't give a hoot what your religious views are as long as you respect my right to be free of your religious dogma and you are not going to try to force the rest of us to live according to your particular religious belief system. When is the right going to realize religion has no place in our elections?
by Steve L | December 13, 2011 - 4:01am
If they were truely religous people then they would lie or tell all the lies they do on the president! One of the 10 commandments is that thou shall not vear false witness which means lie. Can you honestly say that Sarah palin is a religous woman or is she a woman that uses religion to connect to the large religous voting block? BTW since this reporter is attempting to get Sarah Palin's name back in the conversation again I have a challenge for him. Why not do a story on Sarah Palin's financial rise and the impact it must have had on her church the Wasilla Assembly of God and the community. Between Sarah and Bristol their tithes should have brought the church a hugh surplus of money to do a lot of good in the community! It would go a long way in disputing the people who say that Sarah is self serving and nothing but a grifer. Or it could prove that she is a phony.
