According to the Calgary Herald, Scotiabank's recently released commodities report says that Enbridge Inc. could apply for federal approval this year to build an oil pipeline from Edmonton to the new Kitimat LNG terminal on B.C's western coast (and an adjacent condensate line headed the other direction). The pipeline, called the Northern Gateway Pipeline, aims to move oil from Canada's northern oil- and tar-sands to a tankers at Kitimat, for shipment to Asian markets. The project is opposed by some groups who fear oil spills, but plans seem to be moving ahead anyway. We guess they'll sort it out in court later on. According to the report, "The Northern Gateway Pipeline may begin the permitting process by filing with the National Energy Board by late 2009." Read more here.
