Escopeta reports massive Cook Inlet natural gas discovery

Officials with Escopeta Oil said Friday they've discovered what might be the largest natural gas find in Cook Inlet in a quarter century. "Escopeta is very excited by the results of this well, especially since we are only half-way down to the planned total depth," Bruce Webb, Escopeta’s vice president of governmental and regulatory affairs, said in a statement, according to a KTUU-Channel 2 report. "We still have to drill through the Tyonek gas formations, and then into the Sunfish and Hemlock oil formations, on our way to the Jurassic." Escopeta Oil's jack-up drilling rig made the discovery, estimated at about 3.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. "Escopeta says the huge find from only the first of five planned wells is enough to commence planning and engineering for commercial gas production. This year's results have prompted the company to consider an accelerated natural gas development scenario, which could produce new gas deliveries from the inlet as early as 2013," the article says.

Hats off to Senator Thomas Wagoner, the only member of the Kenai delegation worth the powder to blow him to hell and back, the only one who sought a practical answer to the Cook Inlet gas problem. He was the driving force behind the legislation that got Escopeta and their jack up rig up here and drilling, and thanks to him, we can all sleep easier and with a better future in view tonight. So, thanks, Tom. No thanks to the oil companies and Enstar Natural Gas Company, all of whom tried their best to sabotage these practical efforts to develop Cook Inlet resources. No thanks, either, to the other members of the Kenai delegation, who have spent most of the past five years obstructing North Slope gas development----as if that helped solve anything for anyone here. Shame on Mike Chenault. He's the only politician I have ever called a filthy name, straight to his face. And I still see no reason to change that opinion.

Over half of Alaska is not going to sleep better tonight. I (We) are sincerely glad that South Central can rest easy. Now, I would challenge you to put your support behind getting affordable energy to the rest of the State by directing your legislators to follow through on the project that 138,000 Alaskans voted on in 2002. If you think 1 PFD per Alaskan has a positive effect on the economy, consider that many of us are paying what is equal to 4-5 PFD's per year on fuel. I would much rather spend them on hunting, fishing, camping, and hauling relatives around the state. Or taking a long weekend in Anchorage to eat, shop, and check out some events. Rest assured, many of us in the villages and the Interior have a bevy of filthy names on hand and targets to direct them at. People that don't follow the directions of their constituents are at the top of the list. |
