According to The Washington Post, the federal Food and Drug Administration is "on the verge" of approving a species of genetically engineered salmon for use in Atlantic fish farms. If approved, the organisms, called "AquaAdvantage" salmon, would become the first such modified organism approved for human consumption in the United States. The new brand of Atlantic salmon, devised by a company called AquaBounty, contains a gene from an eel-like fish and growth hormones from Chinook salmon, which combine to double the natural, Atlantic-salmon growth rate. An FDA panel will receive a scientific review of the new fish on Sept. 19, then conduct hearings and deliberate on approving the product. Read much, much more, here. For what it's worth, Alaska Beat thinks Alaska salmon producers shouldn't worry much. Even if the new organism is approved, there was absolutely no mention that the company is looking for ways to prevent the product from tasting like other Atlantic salmon. |
