Feds say no to corroded Cook Inlet oil pipe

According to the Anchorage Daily News, federal regulators have "roundly rejected" Chevron Corp.'s request to continue using a badly corroded pipe to carry oil on its Anna Platform, sitting offshore in Western Cook Inlet. Chevron had asked regulators for a waiver from federal rules requiring the repair or replacement of eroded pipelines in ecologically sensitive areas, but regulators denied the request. In some places, the pipeline running from the Anna Platform is only 40 percent as thick as it was originally. In its request for a waiver, Chevron proposed continuing to use the pipe indefinitely while conducting periodic inspections and weekly air patrols to look for oil sheen. Federal regulators didn't order the pipeline closed, but said that Chevron could be subject to enforcement action. Chevron closed the Anna Platform when it received the waiver's rejection and is working with regulators on a fix that will allow the rig to resume operation. Read much more, here. |
