The Discovery Channel announced in a press release Tuesday that "Flying Wild Alaska," its reality TV show following Alaska bush pilots working from some of Era Alaska's remote outposts, will return for its second season on Friday, Oct. 28. The first season of the show opened with the highest-rated debut in the history of the Discovery Channel, and paired up with "Gold Rush: Alaska" for a night of Alaska-themed reality programming every Friday. Both shows will have their second-season debut on the same night. Discovery had previously confirmed that production was under way on the second season of both shows, and cast members of "Flying Wild Alaska" were spotted along the Iditarod Trail earlier this year. "Flying Wild Alaska" follows several pilots working for Era Alaska from some of the more isolated bases, including Unalakleet, Barrow and Nome, often flying to even more remote, off-airport locations to drop off and pick up hunters, miners and scientists. The show centers around the Tweto family -- which owns the airline -- especially Jim Tweto, the father of three girls and husband to the tough Ferno. One of the girls, Ariel, makes appearances in nearly every episode and has become a favorite guest of late-night television host Craig Ferguson.
According to the press release, the second season will see new cargo and events but will follow the same basic premise, tracking the flights of several pilots as they try to get their cargo -- usually unusual, like explosive-tipped harpoons or a wedding cake -- safely to its destination, outrunning weather and dealing with the innumerable major and minor catastrophes that can occur on any given flight. The second season will feature the delivery of a village's first ever ATM -- complete with a shipment of cash to stock it -- and Ferno, Ariel and Ayla Tweto will compete in the annual "Running of the Reindeer" tradition at Alaska's Fur Rondy, according to the press release. Alaska Dispatch recapped every episode of "Flying Wild Alaska" last year and plans to do so again for the upcoming season. Check Bush Pilot for updates as the season continues. Agree 100% that "Flying Wild Alaska" is a great show and "Gold Rush" is a big fake dud. However, National Geographic Channel's new "Frontier Force" about the state troopers, sheriffs, and deputies of Montana is very good. Enjoy them both!

The only "reality" show worth watching. An honest portrayal of segments of Alaskan life. Real people living real lives. Don't even bother with "Gold Rush" idiocy about as Alaskan reality as any Hollywood production and just as artificial as the other "reality" shows infesting the air waves.

I normally don't/can't watch videos like this, especially not when they are this long. But I got this one going and kept an eye on it while doing several other things on the computer (took most of an hour). Wow. This Ariel gal could be a real handful. Don't let her land the plane ... but her people-skills are off-the-chart! I don't have a TV, and am bandwidth challenged ... but I think I'm gonna have to flip back thru your old recaps, and keep an eye on your column for the new season. Looks like a winner to me! |
