Full-page New York Times ad asks Obama to stop Shell Arctic drilling

Monday's New York Times featured a full-page advertisement from environmental groups asking President Obama to block Shell Oil's drilling program off the northern coast of Alaska this summer.

The ad bears the headline, "President Obama, Time is Running Out.  Save America's Arctic."

The full-color spread is endorsed by an array of prominent activists, authors and researchers, including Caroline Cannon, Bill McKibben, Peter Matheissen, Doug Brinkley and Dr. James Hansen, as well as celebrities, including Ted Danson and Sean Penn. It also bears the logos of the environmental groups Alaska Wilderness League, Earthjustice, Oceana and the Sierra Club.

The top portion of the ad features an image of an hourglass in which an Arctic scene appears to turn into crude oil as it passes through the timepiece's waist.

The text addresses Obama directly and reads:

Right now, Shell Oil's drill ships are on their way to America's Arctic Ocean to begin the most aggressive Arctic offshore drilling program in history. Shell intends to drill without a viable plan to clean up an oil spill in the Arctic's extreme conditions and without the necessary infrastructure for more than 1,000 miles. Even scientists in your own administration have said we need better science about the Arctic to make good decisions. Severely cold weather, shifting sea ice, and months of winter darknesss could turn a spill in the Arctic into a logistical nightmare--and a major environmental disaster.

President Obama, one million voices agree--it's time for you to turn Shell Oil's ships around and stop the next Deepwater Horizon disaster from happening in the Arctic Ocean.
