According to a long report from the Anchorage Daily News, if the timeline laid out for the proposed Alaska natural gas pipeline holds true, Alaska will lack many of the skilled workers its construction will require. Economists say that a large number of Alaska residents with the skills necessary -- engineers in particular -- are likely to retire before anyone breaks ground on such a project. Although there is a statewide effort to train new workers, according to the Anchorage School District's career and technical education director, "There's a grave concern about our work force." The article notes that the Alaska Department of Labor has an AGIA-era mandate to prepare Alaskans to work on the proposed gas line, but that training opportunities may still be coming up short. If the trend persists, Alaska will have to use a higher percentage of non-resident labor. Read much more here. |
