(Updated 3:40 p.m.): Hans Gatt has just pulled into Elim and will keep right on going, which means he's about to take over the second position from onetime leader Jeff King. King, who has been in Elim for just under an hour, says at this point, the race is leader Lance Mackey's to lose. Unless Mackey makes a serious mistake, King said, it looks like he'll be this year's Iditarod champion. King said he's not willing to exhaust his dogs in a bid to reclaim the lead.

(Updated 2:35 p.m.): In Elim, checkers are awaiting the arrival of Jeff King at any moment. Lance Mackey has left. Checkers in Elim reported Mackey looked harried, but his dogs looked "awesome," and they were amazed that he was able to get as much done in his short stop at the checkpoint as he did. "He's a whirlwind of activity. He's not slowing down for nothing," checker Bill Gallea said. |
