Gay pride float: Insurance inspector says arson

According to Bent Alaska, a fire insurance investigator is calling the fire that destroyed an Anchorage gay pride float arson. The July 2 fire destroyed (among other property) a parade float that would have carried the Imperial Court of All Alaska in Anchorage's Independence Day parade, but community members scrambled and built a new one (which ended up winning the parade's Grand Prize). The Anchorage Fire Department's investigator, working with the State Fire Marshal, however, was unable to determine the suspicious fire's cause. The AFD report says there was too much damage to determine a precise point of origin, and thus whether or not the fire was intentional. Meanwhile, authorities seek an unknown man witnesses say they saw leaving the scene just before the blaze. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Anchorage Fire Department's Arson Hotline 267-5060 or Anchorage Crime Stoppers (561-STOP).
