Gov's appointments on legislative agenda Friday

A long list of appointments made by Gov. Sean Parnell go before the House and Senate on Friday. This happens every session, toward the end. Aside from one appointment, the list is pretty noncontroversial -- setting a stage that's a far cry from the highly charged appointment by Gov. Sarah Palin last year. Remember that one? Wayne Anthony Ross for attorney general? This year, Fairbanksan Al Barrette's nomination to the Game Board is a possible source of discontent. Democrats could resist the appointment, while conservatives may support Barrette, who favors aggressive predator control. The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner's Chris Eshleman wrote about the controversial appointment a few days ago - read more here. Also on the agenda are a couple of key appointments. Parnell is looking for approval of Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Larry Hartig as successor to the lieutenant governor; Dan Sullivan as attorney general; and Major General Thomas Katkus as Commissioner of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. Lawmakers will cram into the House chambers at 11 a.m. for a joint session to hear the appointments. A majority of members in a joint session - or 31 total lawmakers - is required for confirmation. Here's a full list of the appointments lawmakers will consider. |
