According to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, a $1.7 million, three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education will enable a team at UAF to create lessons and support for Yupik language materials and curricula for subjects such as science, math and history. Some villages already have Yupik-only courses, but the UAF linguistics professor who pursued the grand saw a huge obstacle: "How do you find a science book in Yupik?" The program is working with the Lower Yukon and Lower Kuskokwim School Districts, but the materials generated will eventually be available to other Yupik-speaking districts.
