The House Natural Resources Committee will vote Wednesday on an amendment that reverses environmental protections to Bristol Bay, requiring an oil and gas lease sale in Alaska’s North Aleutian Basin in 2013. The legislation is contained in an amendment in the nature of a substitute to HR 3410, the Energy Security and Transportation Jobs Act, offered by Rep. Doc Hastings, R- Washington. Offshore drilling in Bristol Bay is currently prohibited until 2017, due to efforts by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and the Obama administration. The substitute measure states, in part, “that the Secretary of the Interior shall conduct the lease sale formerly known as Lease Sale 214 for the tracts located in the North Aleutian Basin Outer Continental Shelf Planning Area not later than 1 year after the date of enactment of this act.” The Alaska Marine Conservation Council has asked Alaska fishermen to quickly contact Rep. Don Young, R- Alaska, and a member of the House Natural Resources Committee to urge him to remove from the bill references to Bristol Bay and the North Aleutian Basin. Young can be contacted at 202-225-5765, by leaving a short message with the receptionist or by email at http://donyoung.house.gov This story first appeared in The Cordova Times. Looks like the same old stuff. Fisheries and enviroment against the mining and oil companies. Will they destroy this precious resource? I'm sure they will tell all that it can be done without any impact on Wildlife and Fisheries. Let's pray that common sense prevails and this is preserved for future generations and the Native people! |
