Job market study: Alaska first among US states

The Fraser Institute, a fiscally conservative, free-market think-tank based in Canada, has released the latest installment of its ongoing labor market study. In the 2010 version's ranking of overall labor performance, Alaska wound up first among U.S. states and second overall, bested only by Alberta. The study looked at labor markets in the U.S. and Canada between 2004 and 2009 using data relating to job creation, unemployment, and productivity. Alaska fared particularly well in the average private-sector job growth category, and in average GDP per worker, but the researchers say the data indicates that public sector jobs declined during the same period. The study also looks at regulatory schema and their possible correlation to such job numbers, and Alaska did particularly "well" (or poorly, depending on what perspective one uses) in having one of the lowest average minimum wages expressed as a percentage of per-worker GDP. There're really too many graphs to sum up, so find a digital copy of the survey, here. |
