Joe Miller ramps up

Joe Miller may have lost his fight to unseat U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski. But he certainly didn’t lose his voice. The attorney, war veteran and aspiring politician appears to be taking a cue from the one-time Alaska governor he admired enough to help push into office: Even if you don’t get picked, keep picking on the opponent, in this case any politician or policy that doesn’t comport with your platform. On the same weekend Palin has fueled speculation about a potential presidential bid by announcing an East-coast bus tour, Miller has signaled to his supporters that he, too, has big, although perhaps less lofty, plans. And like Palin, Miller has recently turned up in Arizona. Wednesday night, he and sheriff Joe Arpaio were scheduled to be featured guests at a fundraiser for Maricopa County attorney Bill Montgomery. The same day, Miller gave his followers a head’s up, via his newly revamped senate campaign website, that his quest to inject constitutional conservative values into the political power structure was far from over. Indeed, just as Palin did after losing her White House bid in 2008, Miller has turned his elevated profile into a bull horn to advocate on a broad level the tea party principles he’s so committed to. Miller is now not only the chairman of the Nevada-based Western Representation Political Action Committee, created to push tea-party ideals, but has also launched Alaska-based and national “Restoring Liberty” political action committees, and is in serious talks to launch his own radio show. “If you are really ‘Fed Up’ and want the return of states’ control of our freedom, come join us for the first statewide effort intent on Restoring Liberty,” reads a flier promoting the group’s upcoming inaugural event in Fairbanks June 3. "It's time to get serious about taking our state back, and there is no better place to kick off the Restoring Liberty Alaska PAC than in Fairbanks, where the first ratification of the state constitution was held." The flier continues: We will fight to get state and local candidates, dedicated to the principles of limited government and free of corruption, elected here at home. We will also fight to defeat candidates who reject an original construction of the U.S. Constitution. We will work to elect candidates who accept the important role of the state in our federal system, practice Thomas Jefferson's mandate of nullification of unconstitutional laws and assert states’ rights under the Tenth Amendment. Finally, we will work to restore vote integrity to Alaska elections. Not mentioned on the flier, but noted in his May 25 post on his website is that Miller also remains unwavering in his support of the pro-life movement. The Alaska-based Restoring Liberty PAC registered with the Alaska Public Offices Commission in February, and a group with the same name (Restoring Liberty) registered that same month with the Federal Elections Commission. Wait, there’s more. Miller has also created a non-profit called the Restoring Liberty Action Committee, which he describes as an “organization designed to have nationwide impact by educating the public and elected officials about the original intent of the Constitution, public policy matters, and other matters of national concern through public discussions, research and analysis, and legal work.” This sounds a lot like the Miller we met on the campaign trail in 2010--conservative, committed, vocal. But what was then a guy seemingly coming out of nowhere with a grassroots base now looks to perhaps be a rising soldier in a larger, more organized effort. Miller hasn’t hinted whether he’ll jump into another race. But becoming the man with the microphone is how he’s managed to try to influence from the sidelines what he sought, but lost, at the ballot box. Contact Jill Burke at jill(at)alaskadispatch.com

People may have forgotten, but Joe Miller said in an interview just before the general election that he would honor voter intent regarding the write in ballots. We all know how that turned out. He also said, in the same interview, that veterans' care is a priority of the federal government. He absolutely supported it. Too bad it's not one of the enumerated powers in the Constitution. Just another example of how he would limit federal funding to the things HE supports in the Constitution. So much for his Liberty Action Committee and "educating the public and elected officials about the original intent of the Constitution".

Looking back at the senatorial race I am still amused to note that as soon as Lisa lost the republican nomination the Native corporations who traditionally support democrats abandoned the party and began to invest millions in Lisa’s Independent bid. Makes you wonder whose apple cart was tipped over and just what was in it.

Show me a liberal who voted for Senator Toomey's budget proposal.

The rush for money is on and their running out of time. Joe is and always will be Joe. He has big ideas with no real qualifications and is just asking for money. His effects in California will be low as the former Governor is now under investigation for fraud and stealing taxpayers money. Nevada has former Senator Ensign who will be charged with his crimes. As for the Tea Party well each elected freshman law makers has quickly submitted money for earmarks/pork for their State and hood winked the Tea Party mission. The Tea Party did have a gold but these greedy lack on's just used them to get elected to DC for the bribe money and to sell books. The Tea Party called for smaller government and cuts in spending but when these guys got to DC they tossed that mission out and are now all for themselves and what they can get. Liza got elected to represent the people not a party and that's what she is doing. Joe might want to be careful as the IRS is watching the money flow of fundraisers.

It's odd, the Alaska Dispatch, Joe Miller's not-so-cool Bete Noir, is seemingly sane again on this man and his issues. What happened? Did you all have an "Ah-ha!" moment and discover that Joe Miller isn't the Antichrist? Lots of us knew that a long time ago, and spent the last election season watching the Alaska Dispatch team having the equivalent of journalistic apoplexy over Joe Miller----and wondering----why? God knows, Frank Murkowski was never your favorite person. His daughter has followed along in his steps, joined all the same clubs, pushed the same Globalist-who-cares-about-America agenda, and has pointedly failed to be an effective legislator---did you know that Lisa Murkowski has one of the worst records in Congress for trivial and failed legislation? Gee. Maybe you should have done your homework last August and not been so rabid about Joe Miller. It was downright unseemly and embarrassing to watch you all pulling and tearing and making wild accusations. It reminded me of Junior High romance gone bad. He said, she said, they said. Suddenly, inexplicably, Joe Miller sprouted horns and a tail. Not one of you could say anything remotely resembling "fair" or "balanced" about Joe and you kept at it for MONTHS. Shame on all of you, editors, writers, every single one of you, if you did such a slam job on Joe Miller and didn't really believe that he was Evil Incarnate.

I see folks shooting flaming arrows at Joe and Sarah. You are allies of those destroying this country. The more the collectivists hate those two, the more I like them. That's what it comes down to - who's for individualism and freedom, and who's for their group's benefit by enslaving everyone else (taxation by force to pay for their government handouts) and controlling us all through unlimited "regulation"(EPA, TSA, etc., etc.) We'll keep fighting - forever. Tolerate freedom!

What chasm saidgoes double fer me. pLUs ...All that anarchicindividuzlism means moremercury in the water, moregraft in the statehouse, more public resources into verytinyprivatehands.

Public resources?! ...after you send the taxman with the gun to force it from me..! I might as well be in chains. Communist tool.

what part of Alaska's constitution don't you understand?
by Jon Watts | May 27, 2011 - 2:20pm
That's actually funny, in a tragic sort of way - because you're right, it is a socialist constitution. The issue is getting from collectivist dependence to economic independence before "other people's money" from the Fed runs out.
by chasm | May 26, 2011 - 8:28pm
Jon, I hate to tell you this but it was Joe Miller taking all those handouts, farm subsidies, low income hunting license, and kid care, just to name a few. Also, you may as well know that it was Sarah Palin that was charging the state per diem for staying in her own house, billing the state for her kids travel, and what ever else she could get in the way of money. These two are liars and grifters and you can't believe a word they say, because they don't believe it either.
by Jon Watts | May 26, 2011 - 9:31pm
What hypocrisy. You create a socialist benefit and then blame your slaves for using it when they were eligible by your law. Then you call them liars and grifters. You'll call them (or anyone for freedom) anything to keep this country from returning to capitalism and individual freedom. I expect it - and will fight it to my last breath. I can only hope for my childrens' sake the authoritarian socialist cancer that you carry will be purged from this once great nation in the end.

gotta keep those contributions coming in (and those Alaska Permanent Funds Dividends) huh Joe? "our" state? your state is Kansas!
by EatWildFish | May 26, 2011 - 6:18pm
"Restore vote integrity to Alaska elections"?? Joe Miller? That will come back to bite him ... One thing though: Joe Miller admits he lied repeatedly. $arah Paylin lies repeatedly and doesn't know or care. Sick and sicker.

Fairbanks isn't the place "where the first ratification of the state constitution was held." Alaskans voted to ratify the constitution all at once, and no place took precedence. Fairbanks is the place where the founders drafted the state constitution. |
