The body of Mackenzie H. Howard was found on Feb. 5 in the arctic entryway of the village's Memorial Presbyterian Church just before midnight. Alaska State Troopers working on the case believed Howard to be the victim of homicide, but said little else in way of how she may have died or whether or not there were any suspects.
The name of the youth in custody, a 14-year-old male, has not been released because he is a juvenile, KTUU reports. He is being transported to a Department of Juvenile Justice holding facility in Ketchikan, Alaska, according to troopers.
Kake, home to about 579 people, is located on an island about 95 air miles southwest of Juneau, the state capital.
Howard's death came just one day after many in the community had gathered for a large memorial service in remembrance of another community member.
