Levi Johnston's attorney disputes Bristol Palin's virginity claims

Did Levi Johnston steal Bristol Palin's virginity? Johnston's attorney, Rex Butler, says absolutely not. This week, Bristol, the oldest daughter of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, this week released a HarperCollins memoir titled "Not Afraid of Life: My Journey So Far." Bristol claims she drank so many wine coolers on the night in question that she has no recollection of events, and that she woke the next morning with "something obviously askew'' only to be told by a girlfriend that "you definitely had sex with Levi." Butler disagreed with the part of the story that has Bristol so drunk she didn't know what was happening. "That's obviously not true," he said. Several websites have already raised the question of whether Johnston raped Bristol. Alaska laws says that "an offender commits the crime of sexual assault in the first degree if...the offender engages in sexual penetration with a person who the offender knows is unaware that a sexual act is being committed." Sexual assault in the first degree is what is commonly known as rape. Bristol's book clearly paints her as being "unaware that a sexual act" was being committed on the night she lost her virginity. As she tells the story, the last thing she remembers is sitting by a campfire laughing with friends after consuming a lot of wine coolers. The next thing she remembers is waking up in a tent with Levi's empty sleeping bag next to hers and the sound of friends "outside the tent laughing,'' according to the book. She then texts a female friend, who comes to Bristol's tent to inform her she is no longer a virgin. Butler, one of Alaska's better known criminal attorneys, admitted that if true the story sounds a lot like rape, but he said the story isn't true. And he seemed a little perplexed that Bristol, who had a child with Johnston, would be telling it. "That's not a good thing for her son to digest on down the road," Butler said. What Bristol's mother, Sarah, thinks of all this is unclear. So far she has only Tweeted, as is her style. Sarah's Twitter message said this: "Bristol's Book: Shocking; Refreshing; Honest; INSPIRING! Perfect. Plus 'Not Afraid of Life' gives insight into how media can drive false narrative. Spot on! (& she's courageous to write what she wrote, warning about decisions/consequences in encouraging way, esp for teens!)" It is unclear as what "shocking" references, or whether Sarah thinks Bristol's suggestion that losing ones virginity while being passed out drunk (or at least so drunk you've forgotten the evening) is part of a "warning about decisions/consequences in encouraging way, esp. for teens!" Butler said that although Bristol lied about her sexual encounter with Levi, he doubts his client has much legal recourse. Johnston, who was injected into the Palin whirlwind after Sara decided to run for vice-president, is now a public figure, Butler said. As such, he couldn't win a defamation suit unless he could prove his ex-girlfriend's statements are malicious. "I don't think anyone would buy that,'' Butler said. The legal bar there is a high one. To prove Bristol's statement malicious, Butler would have to demonstrate she is telling a story she knows to be false. All Bristol would need to demonstrate is that she is telling a story that is true to the best of her recollection. On the other, if her story is documentable -- if there are witnesses who can support the story as her book indicates -- Johnston could find himself the subject of a rape investigation. Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell, Palin's successor, has been a staunch advocate of a state crackdown on men who take advantage of women who are incapacitated. He this year advocated, according to the governor's website, that sentences for sex offenses be increased when there were "'aggravating factors,” including the defendant's knowledge that the victim had consumed drugs or alcohol, or a previous dating relationship with the victim."

Fact the journalist asked about Bristol sex life when they interview her classmates in school. Bristol was active in sex long before Levi and had always been seen drinking. Levi broke up with Bristol and a picture was shown of him and his new girlfriend which students say upset Bristol. As for the rape charge one would think a Mayor/Governor would charge a young man if he raped your daughter. But it seems Bristol got Levi back and the Palin Family allowed him to live with them for a short time. Not many parents would allow a young man who is said to rape their daughter live in their home with that daughter. Kids talk and tell on each other as Bristol is just doing what her Mom does so well as it does make money and some will even believe the lie. But Levi has a life ahead and should take note that this is damaging to him even knowing it's false. I feel bad for the real rape victims who will have to fight even harder for Justice since a former Governor/VP candidate decided to get money and lie on her ex boyfriend. Bristol needs some parental guidance right now and maybe her GrandMother can help.

It's weird that she wouldn't text her mother first, but a friend? Sounds like she already

Hey, if that low life pile of crap named Levi didn't want any of this he could have kept his big friggin mouth shut three years ago and not hung around with people like Kathy Griffin and the rest of the pond scum, including the people at the Alaska Dispatch.... who seem to like hanging around with low life pond scum. But, since all his friends now are liberals and sewer dwelling Democrats.... who have no morals at all.... what else could he possibly do but be the doofus he is.

There's *any* question that Bristol's comments are meant to be malicious? *Any?* How could they be anything else? Frankly, I'm not buying it. I think she's "makin' stuff up" just like her mom does, with the intention of coming off lily white and making everyone else look bad. The fact she'd try to take her affection for booze and the fact she may have gotten trashed the first time she had sex with Levi and turn that into a case of date rape is really telling for a lot of reasons, including the fact she was engaged to the guy twice and claims he's got another baby, although I've heard no proof of that. The Palin women seem determined to paint men as either sexual predators or sexually powerless.

Levi needs a REAL lawyer. He has been used and abused by Butler and his henchman Tank.

For gods sake Medred do you really think that this is appropriate subject matter? You are faced with a choice, either grow up and become a jounalist or continue as a cheap smear artist. What's it going to be?

Rape is a serious topic. The big news from the Bristol Palin book is that she alleges that she was raped. Typically you want to know how the accused intends to respond to the allegation.

Keep in mind that Mama Grizzly claim's Bristol and Willow have been repeatedly threatened with rape, including gang rape. Like Bristol, nobody ever reporter any of those threats or any actual assaults. Not to the authorities and not to the school the girls were supposedly pulled out of for their safety.

Sarah Palin is sexually inappropriate and vulgar. She paints vivid word pictures where her daughters are being sexually assaulted. What mother does that? Others have suggested that Sarah's hyper sexualization and promiscuity is a result of having been a victim of some sort of molestation as a child. Joe McGinnis has an interesting and cryptic comment about that on his “The Rogue Blog.” He refers to parts of the book his publisher's struck for legal reasons because they didn't have enough evidence to include it.

If Bristol's anything like her mom (which she is) she's incapacitated when sober. Bristol is a real loser letting her son know the only reason he exists because she got boffed when drunk.

How would you know that? Considering you are in a perpetual haze of cocaine induced idiocy.

A lot of people seem to have a lot of trouble following the timeline laid out in the Bristol book: 1) She had a crush on Levi in the 7th grade (that would be 2004). See here for BP's pertinent MySpace comments: http://politicalgates.blogspot.com/2011/06/bristol-palin-tells-her-story-of.html 4) "The two have sex again that summer (2007), since she felt Levi had needs". ------------------------- How likely is it a girl known to be a "party girl" after her introduction to wine coolers in March 2006 would remember to take her BC/menstrual cramping pills EVERY DAY for nearly a year trying to avoid pregnancy, because her boyfriend has "needs", and isn't using condoms anymore?

Craig, I like your writing style and knowledge. If you wrote a book about the Palins, I would buy it. I think people are perplexed by Levi's legal representation. You describe Rex as well known, however he doesn't seem to be any good. How is the mother able to leave the state and take the child with her. Maybe it's an Alaska thing. In my state, you are free to move away but you can't take the kids.

Levi Johnston has zero credibility. He's told lies about the Palin's from day one. He even apologized to Sarah Palin for all the lies he'd told about her. He's on record as doing so. Bristol never accused him of rape. Just taking advantage of her while she was obviously too drunk to know what was going on. I'm sure she was too humiliated to talk about this before. But if it can help one girl not get into the same situation, I'm sure it's worth it to her. And as for Tripp reading about all this when he gets older. That didn't seem to stop Levi from trashing the Palin's every chance he could. Please spare me the indignation.

Anything that Levi says can be denied, but it's pretty low-class when a kid's mom admits her child is the result of a drunken night of partying - trust me, the kid will read it someday - all Bristol can do is say she lied to sell a book. Bristol should have taken a high road and not provided gossip. I feel sorry for her son.

Reading comprehension isn't your strong point, is it? Likewise, character judgment. She didn't claim she got pregnant due to a drunken camping trip. That's when she claims she got rid of her virginity. It's kinda funny to think she figured she could sleep in a tent in the woods with her boyfriend and he wouldn't do anything. Why would she need to lie about camping if it was going to be so innocent? And doesn't she claim there was stronger alcohol than wine coolers available? We're supposed to believe that the previously chaste and sober princess just drank a few fruity bubbly booze drinks and figured they'd all just laugh and fall asleep?

There is always the chance that Bristol contributed very little to this book except the general theme, already hashed over ad nauseum for the past 3 years. What if the "as told to" was mainly from her mother, eager to have another opportunity to harass Levi Johnston? Some of those anecdotes may never have happened to Bristol, but to Sarah.
by brbr2424 | June 23, 2011 - 8:54pm
That would explain the wine coolers. Wine coolers were big in the 80's.
by brbr2424 | June 23, 2011 - 6:16pm
Between Levi and a Palin, my money's on Levi telling the truth. The Palins have been caught in way too many lies. I think the wine cooler story was a convenient way to blame others which seems to be the theme of the book.

Like mother, like daughter. Bristol is selling herself in any form or fashion just like Sarah, to make that money. Talk about some successful capitalists- all body and no brains. See what they’re willing to do for the cash at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/06/ecstasy-of-sarah-palin_15.html
by Owlie 77 | June 23, 2011 - 5:35pm
Uh huh. She would have had to drink a couple of cases of wine coolers to get *that* drunk. Unless, of course, illegal drugs were also involved. And where was Mama and Papa during all this? Another Palin Victim™ trying to cash in on the name, the sleaze, the sex, and the stupid.
by chris87654 | June 23, 2011 - 7:39pm
This bunch would fit right in on a Jerry Springer show... I can see Bristol screaming at Levi, Sarah jumping in, and bouncers getting in between them - white trash. |
