The line-up

House and Senate leadership assigned some new bills to committees after gaveling in on Tuesday, but save for a couple of hearings slated this week, the opening days of the 26th Legislature's second session are looking pretty basic.
Of note? A highlight will be Gov. Sean Parnell's first State of the State address to the governing body he was once a part of. The Senate bi-partisan majority has planned a press conference immediately after. This morning, the House Education Committee, chaired by Rep. Paul Seaton, R-Homer, takes on high school graduation rates. It's one of those nasty areas Alaska falls low on national averages. At 1:30 p.m., the Institute for Social and Economic Research will lay out its findings on the costs of crime in Alaska before the Senate Judiciary Committee, headed by Sen. Hollis French, D-Anchorage. Senate Resources, chaired by Anchorage Sens. Bill Wielechowski, a Democrat, and Lesil McGuire, a Republican, meets at 3:30 to delve into drafts of a much-awaited energy policy and an omnibus bill wrapping up a handful of energy-related legislation at play last session and through the interm. The same committee meets again at 3:30 on Thursday to continue that discussion. What else? House Finance is dealing with "housekeeping" issues in advance of the annual marathon operating budget review, in which subcommittees will scrutinize every detail of the state's budget proposal. The House and Senate transportation committees will gather jointly at 1 p.m. Thursday to hear from DOT and the Port of Anchorage. Committee hearing schedules are online; scroll down under "Daily Schedules" for a list of the day's events, or, for a more detailed review, click on "Committee Meeting schedules," then plug in a range of dates.
