According to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, six runners on Saturday morning proved that life must go on despite deep cold by running a foot race, Running Club North's "Chilly Buns Mid-winter Fun Run." At the Patty Center starting line, the temperature was 49 below zero, and ice fog was thick in low-lying sections of the course ... maybe even as thick as the irony in calling the race a "fun run." Five of the six hardy souls finished the full 6.4-mile course in about an hour, and one ran a shortened course of 2.5 miles in a half-hour. All the racers reportedly finished safely and in good spirits. Dirk Nickish came in first with a time of 50:14. Bruce Sackinger followed 37 seconds later. While runners were able to compete in the dead of a hard cold snap, ski and dog mushing events have been canceled or postponed in Alaska's sub-zero Golden Heart. Read much more, here. |
