Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Ethan Berkowitz continued to add to a possible general election campaign war chest over the last month, while primary rival Hollis French depleted his campaign coffers in a late push to wrest a primary win from Berkowitz. Campaign finance disclosure reports filed Tuesday with the Alaska Public Offices Commission show both candidates raised about $20,000 since July 26, when the last reports were filed. French spent about $44,000 since late July while Berkowitz reported expenditures of about $30,000. Bottom line: With less than a week until the Aug. 24 primary, Berkowitz has more than $103,000 left in the bank compared to $17,700 for French. Berkowitz has consistently been the front-runner in the Democratic primary and has been resisting spending money on some campaign tactics, like TV ads or other media buys, in an effort to get through the primary with a substantial general election treasury intact. Since the beginning of the 2010 campaign, Berkowitz, a former lawmaker, has contributions totaling more than $262,000 compared to $201,000 for French, who is currently a state senator and will keep that seat if he loses the gubernatorial primary. Reports for the major GOP gubernatorial contenders -- Ralph Samuels, Bill Walker and Gov. Sean Parnell -- had not been posted on APOC's website as of about 5 p.m. Tuesday. |
