The crew of a Kodiak-based MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter prepares to rescue one of four crewman from the fishing vessel Northern Belle (USCG Photo).
According to KTUU-TV, a Seattle-based fishing vessel, Northern Belle, sunk Tuesday afternoon in the Gulf of Alaska about 50 miles south of Montague Island. The crew sent out a mayday and abandoned ship in survival suits before the vessel finally sunk. A Coast Guard cutter and two aircraft responded, but a doctor at Cordova's medical center says the boat's four crew members were in the water for at least two hours before being rescued. One of the four died, but the cause of death is unclear at this time -- likely either hypothermia or a head trauma which was sustained upon exiting the vessel. The survivors were hypothermic, but are recovering in stable condition in Cordova. Read more, here.
