Northern retailer leads cleanup efforts

According to Canwest News (via the Vancouver Sun), a retail company that first arrived in North America in 1668, and since has created a string of stores stretching from Canada's border with Alaska to Labrador, is putting boots on the ground to clean up toxins and piles of junk scattered around its part of the North. For years, the North West Company has spent thousands of dollars and sent its executives out into the country to lead clean up projects for abandoned mines, chemical dumps, and piles of junked machinery. And on a smaller scale, around this time of year, the company assists annual spring cleanup events held by local communities. An executive vice president of retail operations in Northern Canada told Canwest that the company takes such steps because having respect for the land is part of the company's heritage and culture, something it shares with employees and customers.
