'Now it's their turn': Arctic Native peoples and resource rights

The Economist this week has published a short treatment of Alaska Native and Canadian and Greenland Inuit efforts to make their voices heard and assert their rights as Arctic resource development begins to attract more attention worldwide. The article concentrates on the Inuit Circumpolar Council's growing importance to those efforts, and it spends a good deal of time discussing developments in Alaska, particularly the drilling plan concessions Royal Dutch Shell agreed to after North Slope Native groups were successful in a lawsuit against regulators.
