Palin property-tax dodge?

According to Mat-Su Borough Tax Assessor's documents obtained by The Mudflats through an anonymous leak, the borough tax assessment on a piece of land owned by the Palins and family friend Scott Richter have been far too low for an undetermined number of years. The parcel sits off the road-system, near Petersville's Safari Lake and close to Denali State Park, and is the vacation spot Palin recently told Fox News colleague Bill O'Reilly she and her family most prefer. The assessor's document considers the property unimproved with regard to buildings -- a $0 value. That assessment does not account for two wilderness mansions (they're not any kind of "cabin" Alaska Beat ever stayed in), a sauna and a snowmachine/ATV workshop. Read more, and link to the documents themselves, here. The Associated Press spoke with one of Palin's lawyers, Thomas Van Flein, who said that making sure a tax assessment is up to date is not a property owner's job. The Mat-Su Borough assessor said that state law requires property owners to notify the government if there are any errors or omissions on property assessments. However, he conceded that omissions are seldom reported. So far there is no word on just how much revenue the borough has been missing out on, but we expect those numbers will come out eventually.
