Among all the recent memorials to former two-time Alaska Gov. and former Secretary of the Interior, Walter J. Hickel, hardly anyone has mentioned Sarah Palin. Until now, however. Over the weekend, Palin tweeted her commemoration of Hickel's life: Upon his passing,we honor Gov Walter Hickel's life,he made real difference in the world.Unsurpassed impacts on Alaska, the Arctic&her people [sic] Soon afterward, noted Palin critic Geoffrey Dunn wrote a column for The Huffington Post reminding us all that over the last few years, Hickel publicly expressed feeling that Palin had betrayed him, that Palin had "used" him and cast him aside. Dunn reiterates several memorable quotes from Hickel about Palin, including the classic, "She fell in love with the national spotlight and lost her ethical compass. That was a sad day for Alaska and America." Dunn's own opinion of Palin's glib memorial is savage, and to close out the piece, he notes that Palin and Hickel's visions for Alaska and the Arctic were diametric opposites. We don't want to spoil the devastating final sentence, so read much more, here. |
