The monochrome tattoos are different from the red, white and blue tattoos that can be spotted on some Murkowski fans -- those are left over from the senator's 2004 campaign. (Check out the eighth photo in this gallery for a smoky example.) U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski is running for re-election as a write-in candidate after losing the GOP primary to Republican Joe Miller, who is backed by the Tea Party Express and Sarah Palin. Democrat Scott McAdams rounds out the current three-way battle. On Wednesday Miller's campaign filed a FEC complaint against Alaskans Standing Together, alleging that the committee has violated federal law by using funds from federal contractors to influence a federal election. Part of the reasoning behind the fake tats seems to be that voters can wear them into the booth in order to check their spelling when they write-in Murkowski's name. But there are strict rules about electioneering in or near voting locations, so anyone wearing the tattoos would have to keep them discreet. In an e-mail, elections director Gail Fenumiai said, "Any campaign related material may not be visible within a voting location or within 200 feet of the entrance of a voting location. If such items are seen they will need to be removed." Staff of Alaskans Standing Together are encouraging voters to make sure their tattoos are under a piece of clothing until they get into the private voting booth. Steve Wackowski, a Murkowski spokesman, said the campaign has told supporters that once they get within 200 feet of the polling place, all campaigning needs to stop. Jason Moore, a spokesman for Alaskans Standing Together, confirmed the group printed up the tattoos for the AFN convention. He said he wasn't sure whether the strategy was for the tattoos to be worn prior to the election or if they were meant to be worn into the voting booth, but he agreed that it seemed like a good idea for voters to have something on their arm to help them spell Murkowski's name.
