Is Sarah getting too P.C.?

By now everyone's likely heard about former Gov. Palin's Facebook-page call for the firing of White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel for his use (in a private meeting) of a certain word to describe Democrats who attack other Democrats. Well, U.S. News and World Report columnist John A. Farrell is worried Palin's going soft on everyone. "I'm disappointed to see Palin embracing this kind of political correctness. I thought that was the province of very silly liberals," he writes. "Emanuel might well have chosen 'moronic' or 'foolish or 'imbecilic'." Farrell ends by suggesting that maybe Alaskans aren't as "feisty" or "hardy" as he had assumed: "Maybe the whole state is filled with sappy, politically correct morons like Ned Flanders." Read more here. Incidentally, the words "moron" and "imbecile" also began as terms for developmentally a-typical people, but for some reason they're pretty acceptable to most English speakers. So, out of Farrell's choices, "foolish" was probably Emanuel's best option, at least in the eyes of Alaskans whose loathing for the word Emanuel used grows each time they read it or hear it. [Correction (2/3): In our original post we spelled Rahm Emanuel's name wrong several times, even falsely attributing one of the errors to Mr. Farrell. We regret our errors and thank our conscientious reader for calling them to our attention.] |
