Superstar cupcake bar

My inner sugar gremlin has a way of coaxing me into a piece of chocolate or a slice of cake now and then. When the desire for a confection becomes unbearable, as it does often, I'm happy I found a new idea in Anchorage with an even sweeter twist -- the Superstar Cupcake Bar.

Superstar Cupcake Bar's tickle-me pink walls seem frosted to match the moist confections offered.
Located inside Superstar Pastry Design, this confectionary is a sweet tooth's paradise. Similar to the idea behind Coldstone Creamery, Superstar Cupcake Bar offers specially-created and decorate-it-yourself cupcakes. A single specialty creation or DIY cupcake costs $4, and a 6-pack ranges from $20 to $22, depending on which creations you order. Windows light up the cupcake bar's tickle-me pink walls, which are decorated with large pictures of wedding and event cakes from Superstar Pastry Design. The store seats about 20 people in large, comfy black sofas, and a drive-through window serves those who want to wait in the car. Customers order their specialty creations from the cupcake artist behind a glass counter by selecting cake, filling, frosting and topping. The cupcake artist then selects from tubs of crushed peppermints, jelly beans, graham crackers and much more, and the cupcake becomes the perfect small snack ready for consumption.
Two specialties: German Chocolate and The Little Prince
Although the DIY cupcakes are fun to make, the specialty creations are truly works of art. The artist who created our cupcakes used impressive care while adding sprinkles, filling, and even a cherry on top. Take a look at the photos -- these cupcakes were almost too pretty to eat. Almost. We ordered the German Chocolate, the Lemon Drop, the Little Princess and the Little Prince. Each cupcake had special toppings, but the constant factor remained -- the moistness of the cupcake. The Little Princess is a red velvet cupcake fit for royalty with Bavarian cream filling, raspberry buttercream, rainbow sprinkles and a plump maraschino cherry on top. The Little Prince features fudge filling, cream cheese icing, chocolate sprinkles. Peanut butter cups crown the Little Prince and cure any peanut butter desire by leaving a lasting peanutty taste. Be sure to ask the cupcake artist to add a few more peanut butter cups, though. My favorite specialty cake by far was the Lemon Drop. This creation consisted of vanilla cake, lemon curd filling, a vanilla buttercream frosting topped with lemon candies.
Two more specialties: The Lemon Drop and The Little Princess
Altogether, the Superstar Cupcake Bar features three different cakes, seven fillings, four icings and more than 17 toppings. With all these choices, there were many combinations we didn't order, but there are two future specialties we'll order soon: The Jelly Belly, a vanilla cupcake with strawberry filling, raspberry buttercream littered with jelly beans; and Mom's Apple Pie, a vanilla cupcake with apple-cinnamon filling, vanilla buttercream, cinnamon sugar and graham cracker gently inserted into the middle of the cupcake.
