Valdez halibut derby winner disqualified

According to the Anchorage Daily News (via the Juneau Empire), Valdez local George Lavasseur's nearly 364-pound halibut has been disqualified from the Valdez Jackpot Halibut Derby after he admitted that he got help reeling the monster in. Although the derby prize will go to the second place winner, a 277-pounder caught by Glennallen's Loren Bell, derby officials are so excited about Lavasseur's fish -- the largest ever brought to port in Valdez -- that they decided to give him $10,000 to recognize his catch.
