'Vet City' at old Eklutna Lodge proposed for homeless

According to Alaska Star, a new non-profit organization is proposing to build a "Vet City" at the old Eklutna Lodge, roughly halfway between Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley, to house homeless people -- veterans in particular -- from around Southcentral and help them get back on their feet. The proposal as it stands now would provide housing on an honor-farm system (where residents provide labor in exchange for room and board, as well as a variety of transitional help) for 400 homeless people, with priority given to homeless veterans. This new proposal, which is in the early stages and still faces financial challenges, grew out of dissatisfaction with the way Anchorage is handling the problems posed by -- and faced by -- its most vulnerable citizens.
