Video: The Palins talk ANWR with Greta Van Susteren

Fox News Channel's Greta Van Susteren made her way to ANWR with Sarah and Todd Palin to see what all the fuss is about. Before proceeding, it should be noted that Van Susteren's husband, John Coale, has served as an advisor to Palin and has said he created her political action committee and legal defense fund. The interview with Van Susteren begins on an airplane from Anchorage to the North Slope and features a brief recap of oil industry history in Alaska. Then it takes a nasty turn against "extreme environmentalists" and President Obama. The video ends with the group standing on the coastal tundra to pitch oil development in the contentious region. Watch for yourself below, or go here if you have scripts disabled. And for what it's worth, we were surprised to hear Todd use the word "we" when speaking about the activities of oil companies on the North Slope, particularly BP PLC. As far as we know, Mr. Palin resigned from BP in September of 2009. More importantly, we were also surprised to learn from Sarah Palin -- a former Alaska oil and gas commissioner -- that ANWR contains any "proven reserves" of oil at all, let alone "billions" of barrels. Because not much exploration has been conducted in the reserve, the oil and gas resources there are classified as "potential reserves." There's a big difference between those two classifications -- especially in ANWR's case. There is considerable uncertainty regarding petroleum resources there, in terms of both reservoir volume and production potential. There have been far more exploratory wells drilled in National Petroleum Reserve Alaska, however. |
