Will Palin find Alaska in Arizona?

PHOENIX -- Todd and Sarah Palin now own a home here in Arizona. This might not be the perfect place for a former Iron Dog snowmachine race champion, but it probably couldn't get much better for a former Alaska governor who loves the sun and the run. First off, there is little need for a tanning bed of the sort Sarah had installed in the Alaska governor's mansion in Juneau. The sun shines bright and hot and nearly constant. The Arizona days are too hot, some might say, but for much of the year the nights are nice and cool. All of which tends to make this a wonderful place for runners, of which Sarah is an avid one. If you time things right, you can go often go for a long morning run in the overnight cool, finish just as the day is warming, and then relax in the sun, maybe even work for a while on that suntan. Flagstaff, a city a couple of hours from here on the smooth, fast pavement of the Arizona interstate is a Mecca for runners. And that smooth, fast, pavement is but another Arizona attraction. "No frost heaves,'' as an old Alaska friend now living in the Southwest observed. No frost heaves are a good thing for those who like to push hard on the accelerator of the SUV, and the Palins all have a bit of a reputation for going fast. Todd won the Iron Dog by going fast. Palin daughter Willow recently got nabbed for doing 85 mph in the family SUV back home in Alaska. And Sarah, of course, embraced the Daytona 500 as a "risk-taking, speed-loving all-American event" when she was running for vice-president with Arizona Sen. John McCain. It's too bad for Willow that she wasn't speeding in Arizona instead of Alaska. She would have never gotten that silly ticket. The posted speed limit on the interstate is 75 mph, but 85 mph seems more the norm. Suffice it to say, you best not be dallying in the fast lane going 75 mph or someone will try to run you over, given that Arizonans -- to their credit -- seem to understand the European concept of the "fast lane'' on the left for passing and the "slow lane'' on the right for lollygagging. And they seem to lack that Alaska cussedness that makes a few in the north want to make an issue of the speed limit, i.e. "As long as I'm going the speed limit, I can drive in any damn lane I want.'' Arizonans seem, for lack of a better word, a little more "civilized" than Alaskans in this regard. Other than that, though, they're the same strange mix of socialist common-sense conservatives with only slight differences. In Alaska, all the common-sense conservatives keep their lips firmly attached to the public teat. In Arizona, the common-sense conservatives hide out in Stepfordian communities, which is a kind of self-imposed socialism, at least in terms of collective decision-making and public control of individual behavior Arizonans might not be into economic socialism the way Alaskans are with the Permanent Fund Dividend program, but many of them are way overboard in terms of public control of individual behavior. If an Alaska community tried to impose zoning of the type that exists by covenant in the subdivisions of Arizona, there would be rioting in the streets. Palin daughter Bristol bought a house in a middle-class suburb here. The house came with a 57-page rulebook on how to behave.

Nice compound. Love it. Good article. Alaska Dispatch, do a little investigative journalism and see if you guys can ferret out why Sarah Palin is doing Fox broadcasts from the Arizona governor's office.

Sorry AZ, but AK is very glad that the Twitter Quitter is moving to your state. Permanently, we hope. Bin Laden's look-alike hacienda will be all Wasillyfied in no time. SHE made the regulations in Wasilla, she didn't in AZ. Can't wait to see her in trouble with the law down there. She doesn't have a history there to over-ride laws, cept maybe her BFF Brewer.

Dear Arizona: You're going to LOVE having the Quitter as a resident. If there's a disaster she'll bake cookies. I hope the whole clan moves there permanently.

Honestly, in all my years, has there ever been such a combination of clown, idiot, and grifter all wrapped in one? I am just so glad Caribou Barbie is out of my state. She actually never came back from the 2008 campaign.

Suave, stylish, smart & sensible Sarah Palin and her beautiful family are happy, optimistic people, secure & comfortable in who they are, and always greeting others with a smile and a kind word. They will be loved, honored, and admired wherever they choose to live. Arizona is lucky to have another bright superstar; but, of course, the Alaskan Aphrodite will always be a Wasilla Lady Warrior at heart.

@distebbi: Sorry, our loss is now your loss. Just move the press in next to her and she'll have a 15ft high fence built and you'll never see her!

Palin can STAY in Alaska. We don't need that lying, ignorant, QUITTER, self centered egomaniac in our state! Maybe when Arpaio gets booted, they can BOTH live in Alaska.

People who use the term [quitter] directed at Governor Palin are simply

You might have missed it, since you are obviously not Alaskan. She QUIT playing at being AK governor nearly 2 years ago. It was a fine moment indeed. What spoiled it was that her sock puppet, Captain Zero, then became gov.

apachiejoe---you joke. It is obvious you've never been to Alaska. Also Sarah has not really earned all those millions by the sweat of her brow. It is a matter of being at the right place at the right time and having a cute behind that old men like to view. She will never live down that she quit half term as gov. Alaskans aren't quitters and also we don't appreciate outsiders telling us what to do or how to act. You betcha! It least I can write in complete sentences. |
