Wearing his trademark Alaska flag bolo, U.S. Rep. Don Young sat down with KTVA reporter Matt Felling to talk about environmentalists, Afghanistan, and how stupid it is for people to complain that Obama isn't doing enough about the spill. "Does he have a magic wand? No," Young said. "And as far as the Secretary (of the Interior) goes, very frankly, I think he's done everything he could possibly do on this issue." Below are some excerpts. The first video focuses more on the Gulf spill, while in the second the conversation lasers in on Afghanistan. "The president had to let McChrystal go," Young said. "He had to let him go because it's sort of like condemning the captain in the wheelhouse and you're down in the galley having a cup of coffee. You're not going to drink that coffee very long. You just don't do that." Young went on to say that one of his biggest concerns about the war is the rules of engagement being followed in Afghanistan. "I've talked to too many of my troops that have told me the same thing," he said. "Their buddy gets killed and they can't return fire because they might be charged by our own government." Felling: "You receive more money from BP than any other Republican in the House of Representatives. They have your ear; you have theirs. What are you telling them?" Young: "My first talking to them is 'Make sure that the people directly affected, immediately are taken care of.' I don't want the fishermen in the Gulf to go through what my fishermen in Alaska did." Felling: "You've said that 'environmentalists are a self-centered bunch of waffle-stomping, Harvard-graduating intellectual idiots.'" Young: "I will to this day defend that statement, because those promoting no resources have led this country into a darn-near economic collapse." Felling: "Bill Clinton suggested the U.S. Navy should bomb the BP well shut. Is this a rational thought? Young: "That's a Bill Clinton thought. It'd be a total disaster ... It sounds good. Nobody knows the difference and says 'Why don't we do what Bill Clinton wants to do?' I think that's very very shortsighted."
