It may still feel like winter in much of Alaska, but on Mount McKinley, North America's highest peak, the climbing season is really heating up. And on Saturday, a group of local climbers became the first to reach the summit of the much-climbed peak.

There were more than 200 climbers somewhere on McKinley -- often also referred to by its other name, Denali or "The Great One" -- as of Tuesday night. That's nearly a quarter of the total number of climbers registered to tackle the peak sometime this year...

An Associated Press story Tuesday pointed out the double standard in the way the U.S. government treats energy companies when it comes to the inadvertent killing of birds as a result of their operations. In particular, the report notes that wind farms responsible for the killing of federally-protected bird species struck by quick-spinning turbines get a free pass from prosecution, where more traditional energy companies like oil and electric face hefty fines for birds killed by flying into power lines or mired in waste pits...

Another Alaska volcano has grumbled to life. Pavlof Volcano, an 8,261-foot peak on the Alaska Peninsula, awoke Monday morning, kicking off a "low-level eruption of lava," according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory . Pavlof, about 30 miles northeast of the community of King Cove, is a frequently-active volcano that last erupted in 2007.

Shortly after 11:30 Monday, the AVO posted the following update to its website on the status of Pavlof volcano:...

Even as the White House took a step forward on Arctic policy by signing its National Strategy for the Arctic Region on Friday , the U.S. lags behind other Arctic nations in taking advantage of its northernmost borders. Icebreaking capability is one area where the U.S. is lacking, and a new icebreaker commissioned by the Russian government and expected for delivery early next year may put America even further behind the curve...

A former UCLA professor contracted by the Department of Interior for work at the High Power Auroral Stimulation (HIPAS) research facility outside of Fairbanks, Alaska will plead guilty to defrauding the government out of hundreds of thousands of dollars in the mid-2000s. Alfred Wong , 75, who holds a doctorate in plasma physics from Princeton University, will have to pay the government nearly $1.7 million as part of his punishment for fraud related to two government contracts, including one for work at HIPAS estimated at $25 million...

Goose Creek Correctional Center, that $240 million prison facility on a lonely road in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough , is now serving its intended purpose, housing Alaska prisoners previously kept out of state at facilities in Colorado.

Officials had originally said those out-of-state inmates were set to arrive in April of this year, but about 200 inmates landed back in Alaska in February, with more in May. Eventually, all of the approximately 1,000 prisoners kept outside of Alaska will occupy the facility about 30 minutes outside of Wasilla. There are currently 673 prisoners at the complex, enough to occupy about half of Goose Creek's 1,280 beds for prisoners...

Let the fanfare begin.

The USS Anchorage on Wednesday pulled into port in its namesake city, kicking off four days of celebrations culminating with the ship’s commissioning on Saturday, an event with an expected 4,000 attendees gathering at the dock near downtown Anchorage.

On Wednesday, a welcome ceremony for the vessel took place, with words from Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan, a blessing and prayer for the ship, and a performance by the Ida’ina dance group, made up primarily of Alaska Natives from around Cook Inlet...

A 5-year-old girl from the Southwest Alaska community of Mountain Village was shot and killed by her 8-year-old brother on Monday, Alaska State Troopers reported. The two young children had been left home alone when the shooting took place, troopers said.

Few details were available Tuesday, but the 8-year-old was reportedly playing with a .22-caliber Ruger rifle when the weapon discharged, fatally shooting his sister at about 2:20 p.m. Monday. It was not immediately clear if the shooting was accidental or intentional, and the girl's body was sent to the State Medical Examiner's office in Anchorage for an autopsy. The boy was familiar with the weapon and had used it the previous day to go hunting, according to Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters...

Moose’s Tooth is not the biggest or best-known mountain in a range that bears the name of the 49th State where it resides -- it’s overshadowed in both respects by the granddaddy of Alaska peaks, Mount McKinley, also known as Denali or “the high one.” At a height of only 10,335 feet, Moose's Tooth is dwarfed by McKinley’s massive 20,320-foot elevation. Despite its diminutive stature, however, it is considered one of the more difficult climbs in the Alaska Range, especially its tricky and particularly steep east face, sitting above Buckskin Glacier at its base...
