Alaska Dispatch has established itself as a state and regional leader for excellence in journalism with its reporters winning dozens of awards.
First Place, Breaking News: Alaska Dispatch beat out the Seattle Times, The Oregonian and others for first place in breaking news reporting for its coverage of the plane crash that killed former U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens and four others. "From the moment (the Dispatch) found out about the crash, it gave readers up-to-the-moment coverage of the unfolding events." Second Place, Column Writing: Dispatch reporter Craig Medred "offers an intimate look at Alaska life in this attention-grabbing series," the judge said. "Medred provided a detailed, intimate account of a man’s attack by a grizzly bear." First Amendment Award: The First Amendment Award is given to the organization that best upholds the public's right to access information by the government. The Dispatch took the 2010 honors for taking the lead on filing for the release of documents concerning the employment relationship between the Fairbanks North Star Borough and Joe Miller. Best Investigative Reporting and the Public Service Award: The Dispatch's "dogged pursuit of public records and other reporting into the background" of U.S. Senate candidate Joe Miller was recognized as the best investigative reporting in the state in 2010, as well as winning the public service award.
