'Arctic Flight: A Century of Alaska Aviation' at the museum

The Anchorage Museum presents "Arctic Flight: A Century of Alaska Aviation." The exhibit opens Feb. 9 and runs until Aug. 11.

According to the Anchorage Museum:"On the 100th anniversary of powered flight in Alaska, the Anchorage Museum opens “Arctic Flight: A Century of Alaska Aviation.” This exhibition reveals the state’s remarkable aviation history, including its pioneer bush pilot era and its strategic role in World War II. Through artifacts, video and photographs, this exhibition tells compelling true stories of survival, adventure and ingenuity in Alaska’s skies."

Arcitic Flight events include:

  • Toddler Time, 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15 and Saturday, Feb. 16: Treat toddlers to dancing, singing, creating and learning through guided activities. February’s Toddler Time centers on flight and includes a stop in the “Arctic Flight” exhibition to see an airplane. Included with admission.
  • Lecture: "Air Age Cartography: How Aviation and WWII put Alaska at the Center of the World" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21. The prevailing image of Alaska is generally at the far edge of the Earth. But University of Alaska Fairbanks history professor Terrence Cole says once, briefly, Alaska was the center of the world. Free.
  • Lecture: "Anchorage Aviation History" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 21. Norman Lagasse, former director of the Alaska Aviation Museum, highlights the trials and achievements of Southcentral Alaska’s first pilots. Free.
  • Lecture: "Wrangell Mountain Skyboys" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 18.  Katie Ringsmuth, National Park Service historian, tells the tales of famous Alaska pilots who flew over some of Alaska’s highest, most rugged terrain to establish aviation in the Wrangell-St. Elias region. Free.
