UPDATED: Why did Palin mislead Greta Van Susteren about the rebate check? Print E-mail
November 12, 2008

By Amanda Coyne

UPDATED:  I don't have the transcript, but Gov. Palin talks to Greta about the resource rebate check in an interview you can find here, titled "Palin and the Economy." Perhaps she was distracted in the previous interview. My bad, and apologies to the governor, if so.

Since Gov. Sarah Palin was tapped by John McCain as veep, watchful eyes have taken note of nearly every misstep and misstatement Palin made on the trail. Some of them seem fairly petty. But some, like the fact that she supposedly told Congress “thanks but no thanks” to the Bridge to Nowhere, were significant. They were significant because they were such obvious distortions of her record. Sure, Joe Biden gaffed all the time, but they were gaffes. Unlike Palin, he never seemed to knowingly lie or mislead. Palin did that more than once, and it seems she isn’t finished.

In Palin’s interview with Greta Van Susteren that aired on Fox News last night, Van Susteren asked Palin about the $1,200 check that Alaskans received this year. That would have been the resource rebate check that she fought hard for and pushed into law.

This year, Alaskans got that, on top of the $2,069 Permanent fund check. In total, every Alaskan that was eligible for a Permanent fund check got $3,269.

That extra $1,200 was from the spoils of a huge new windfall profits tax on the oil companies.

But Palin didn’t say that. Instead, she told Van Susteren that the $1,200 was the Alaska Permanent fund dividend check.

Here’s part of the transcript:

VAN SUSTEREN: …Most Americans don't understand. What is this $1,200 check these Alaskans are getting?

PALIN: It is the Alaska permanent fund dividend check. Every year as oil development takes place and revenues derived from this development, a chunk of the money goes into the stock market and makes the money for Alaskans and it goes into the permanent fund. It is about a $30 billion fund right now, it's a savings account.

And then Alaskans get a dividend as a result of the savings in that account.

And it is good, because our constitution says that it is Alaskans who own resources underground. It is not like other states where perhaps the oil company actually owns all the resources underground and they're the ones that solely benefit from development. Here in Alaska we partner with the oil industry…

But our constitution says that Alaskans own the resources, so they derive benefit every time the resource is developed and the money is made on it. That is what the Alaska permanent fund dividend check is every year that people get…

And she goes on and on. It’s highly improbably that this was just a mistake. That $1200 was just too specific. The rebate check was one of her crowning achievements this year. She took criticism from it from her own party. To some Republican lawmakers, it smelled suspiciously like Socialism.

So why did she lie? Imagine how the truth would sound to the average Fox viewer: “In Alaska, we raised taxes on the rich oil companies, and with that money, spread the wealth around, also.”

Because she can.
And nobody does their job to question her.
She is terrible, and the people of Alaska yes YOU!, don't call her on it and neither does the MSM.
You can put away your steak knives, but you may need them for the barracuda!!!

Beldar's right, the Sea Times 'mis-spoke.' The additional revenue that was distributed to Alaskans came from an increase in existing taxes, not a new windfall profits tax.
Severance vs Windfall Taxes
written by SR in AK, November 14, 2008
Not sure why you consider yourself an expert about this stuff Beldar, but whatever your reasons, there's no excuse for your rudeness. You are obviously no more an energy expert than the Gov of Alaska.

Here's a link to a relevant article:

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2008103325_alaskatax07.html

Here's the part that you should pay particular attention to, as it seems to me that the $1200 check discussed in this article did NOT come from severance taxes:

Alaska collected an estimated $6 billion from the new tax during the fiscal year that ended June 30, according to the Alaska Oil and Gas Association. That helped push the state's total oil revenue — from new and existing taxes, as well as royalties — to more than $10 billion, double the amount received last year.
While many other states are confronting big budget deficits because of the troubled economy, Alaska officials are in the enviable position of exploring new ways to spend the state's multibillion-dollar budget surplus.
Some of that new cash will end up in the wallets of Alaska's residents.
Palin's administration last week gained legislative approval for a special $1,200 payment to every Alaskan to help cope with gas prices, which are among the highest in the country.
That check will come on top of the annual dividend of about $2,000 that each resident could receive this year from an oil-wealth savings account.

It's not a windfall profits tax.

It's a severance tax.

Learn the difference, and then we can talk. Until then, you're either (a) tragically uninformed, or (b) just a liar.
MSM and AIP?
written by Native_Son, November 12, 2008
She keeps bringing up Ayers, also, you betcha...but my question is, and has been ever since she was nominated for veep -- where is the mainstream media on the Alaska Independence Party story? I mean seriously, shouldn't this be a bigger story than it is, especially since SP insists on continuing to mention Ayers and the "palling around with terrorists" line? Alaskans, tell me, what am I missing here? Both the Palins are or have been on very friendly terms with an openly secessionist group -- so why is this not a huge story? I am from South Carolina -- we know a thing or two about secession -- and I can tell you unequivocally that if any SC politician or a pol from any Southern state at all had even tenuous ties to such a group, the show would be over and that person's political career would lie in ruins (like my beloved southland after Sherman!). So why do we not hear more about AIP and the Palins?
Unbelievable

I can't believe the media is still paying attention to Palin. Now that she and McCain have lost the election, what is the fascination with her?? The MSM has granted her countless interviews, and I simply don't want to hear about her or see her any longer. She lies through her teeth (all without blinking an eye), has a divisive personality (which this country does not need right now) and she is dumb as a box of rocks. Personally, I find it incredibly painful to listen to her speak. And I thought Bush was hard to listen to.
Why does she lie?
written by chasm, November 12, 2008
Because she doesn't know how to do anything else. She lies about almost everything. Troopergate was just a tip of the iceberg, there is the per diem, kids travel costs, the bridge, earmarks, and clothing.

yep, if she admits she pushed for legislation that forced oil companies to pay a windfall profits tax, she wouldn't have been able to rail against obama and his plan to 'spread the wealth'.

everything this woman says is a lie! unreal!!!
oh the drama!!!!

she mentioned the PFD and why Alaskans profit. No story here, so Amanda, STOP!!!!!
Bill Ayers Redux- The Saga Continues
written by swhit, November 12, 2008
In the governor's interview on CNN with Wolf Blitzer, she continues to rant regarding Bill Ayers. So is the election really over in the Governor's mind? Why does she continue to isolate her state by raving in regards to the president-elect? She has develpoed the Biblical Pharaoh syndrome; She should let it go! However, it seems as if the governor has no regards for her constituency by continuing with her attacks. She will need the Democrats to aid Alaska, but it seems as if her only care is herself. Again, one is justified or condemned by ones words.
DOESN'T LISTEN TO QUESTIONS!!
written by BUDDY, November 12, 2008
Silly Palin is dense, she doesn't even listen to the questions, just starts babbling. An hour after the interview she probably doesn't even know what she said and just goes on about her business. Don't blink, just Keep talking Sarah, your only making yourself look dumber and dumber.
By ones words one is justified and condemned

True, this election is over, but the governor continues with the rhetoric through her media interviews. Honestly, do you really think that the governor is finish? By her own words the governor continues to state her willingness to remain in politics, thats if the door is open, and she stated that she will plough through the door. Futhermore, who knows what her plans are for the Senate position if it becomes available. If Sen. Stevens wins, he will be expelled, and Alaska will have a special election. Do you realy think that the governor will remain on the sidelines or will we continue to hear more fabrications all the way to the Senate? The presidential election is over, but its the governor that continues the rhetoric.

Double Mindedness Brings Instability
written by swhit, November 12, 2008
Gov. Palin adamantly accused president-elect Obama of spreading the wealth and his socialism agenda, so one assumes that she could not be forthright because she too was also spreading the wealth. However, one continues to stress the importance of the governor waving the Christian flag, yet she has no problem with one of the things that God hates and that is the lying tongue. The governor should stop evoking God in every speech; instead, she should live God in the whole of her living because a double minded person is unstable in all their ways.

This year the additional $1,200 check was given out at the same time as the regular permanent fund check, to people who qualified for the PFD, as a bonus on a year of incredible windfall to the state coffers. It is a bit over the top on the call that Palin is lying about this. The election is over - Obama won. Palin is Governor. Put away the steak knives.

Federal law turns nation’s public schools into 'no-think zones'

Under The No Child Life Behind Act, public schools have neglected many of the time-honored learning experiences long considered staples of a well-educated person. The act requires that every child’s performance from grades 3rd through 12th be measured by standardized testing. And this has placed enormous pressure on teachers to raise test scores, or as it's known, "teaching to the test."
